The fall and spring term applications open August 1. The following deadlines pertain to both domestic and international applicants. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Pacific time on the noted deadline dates.

Two Essays

1. Consider something in your life you think goes unnoticed and write about why it's important to you.

2. Tell us why you decided to apply to the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In addition, share with us the academic, extracurricular, or research opportunities you would take advantage of as a student. If applicable, provide details of any circumstance that could have had an impact on your academic performance and/or extracurricular involvement.

Academic Course Preparation

 A competitive academic record should show some of the most challenging advanced-level work offered at or through your school in as many areas as possible, while maintaining a strong GPA. The following chart shows the number of years that most admitted students studied in each subject area.

Subject Area and Years

English 4년 / Math * 4년 / Social Studies 3-4년 /  Science 3-4년 /  Single Foreign Language ** 3-4년 / Additional Academic/Fine Arts 2년 : Total Units 19-22

* Math requirement includes at least one year each of algebra, geometry, and advanced math, or an integrated sequence of courses. If you take any of these courses in middle school, that will count toward the requirement. Courses that will not fulfill this requirement include: statistics, business math, and computer classes.

** Students who are not native English speakers can satisfy the foreign language requirement if they were educated in their native language through grade eight.

Students who have studied a foreign language using only Rosetta Stone have not fulfilled the foreign language requirement.

GPA and Class Rank

Unweighted, academic GPAs between a 3.8 and a 4.0, and a class rank in the 83-96 percentile.

레귤러 어드미션, 얼리 액션, 얼리 디시전입니다.             
레귤러 어드미션의 지원 마감일은 1월 1일이며 발표일은 4월 1일입니다.   
얼리 액션의 지원 마감일은 11월 1일 합격 발표일은 12월 31일        
얼리 디시전의 지원 마감일은 11월 1일 합격 발표는 12월 15일입니다.

그렇다면 Superscore 제도란 무엇인가? 한번 살펴 보겠습니다.

Ivy league의 하버드, 브라운, 프린스턴, 예일대학등 수많은 명문대학들이 superscore제도를 채택하고 있습니다.

대학에서 이 제도를채택하고 있는 대표적인 이유는 최고의 점수를 합산하다 보면 자동적으로 학교의 평균 입학 점수도 높아질뿐만 아니라 학교 랭킹과 직접적인 상관관계가 있기 때문이며, 지원자 본인도 최고의 점수를 만들어 낼 수 있으므로 superscore제도는 이러한 면에서  큰 장점이라고 볼 수 있습니다.

Superscore은 그동안 시험 본 과목별로 최상의 점수 hightest score를 모아 대학에 지원하는 제도 인데요, 예를들어 총 3회의 sat시험을 보았다면 다른 날짜들에서 본 시험 성적중 reading, math 과목별 점수에서 최고의 점수를 합산하여 superscore를 만들어 내는것 입니다.

SAT. ACT 점수 제출은 1월 1일까지 대학에 제출되어야 하며, SAT, ACT Writing도 함께 요구 됩니다.

Government-funded US scholarships for international students 

미국 정부 지원 미국 유학생을 위한 장학금

Fulbright Foreign Student Program – Perhaps the most popular of government-funded US scholarships for international students, Fulbright offers scholarships for graduate students, young professionals and artists to study in the US for one year or more. Open to international students in all fields excluding medicine.

Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program – This is a non-degree scholarship program for international experienced professionals wishing to undertake 10 months of academic study in the US. Although the funding doesn’t support degree qualifications, students are able to study and develop their knowledge at academic institutions across the nation.

Non-governmental US scholarships for international students 

민간 지원 장학금

Abbey Road Summer Scholarships – Offering US scholarships worth US$1,000 for language and art students, as well as US$500 fellowships for ‘summer enrichment’ at institutions within the states.

The Next Gen Scholarship Fund – Scholarships to study in the US for non-residents and international students. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA (grade point average) and be enrolled on a program at an accredited university within Washington DC, Maryland or Virginia. Worth US$1,000.

Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarship – Awarded twice a year to passionate international students to study in the US. Worth US$1,000.

David P. Shapiro Annual Leukaemia Scholarships – Two annual scholarships, worth US$1,000 each, open to current or prospective students in the US diagnosed with leukaemia.

For Asian students, 아시안 지원자 장학금:

East-West Center Scholarships and Fellowships – Scholarships to study in the US within selected institutions, aimed at international students from the Asia-Pacific region.

Japan-United States Friendship Commission – An initiative run by Japan and the US, the commission offers grant programs to Japanese students wishing to study in the US (and vice versa).

AAUW International Fellowships – Fellowships offered by the American Association of University Women for female international students to study in the US.

MIT-Zaragoza Women in Logistics and SCM Scholarship – US scholarships for female students of any age, ethnicity or nationality, to study at the Zaragoza Logistics Center at MIT.

ACT 리딩의 이해와 36점 만점 공략법

2015년 ACT Reading Nation 평균점수는 21.4를 기록했습니다. 

그동안 5년동안의 act 리딩 기록에 대한 차트를 보면 거의 21점대의 점수에서 오르고 내리고를 반복하고 있지만, 실제로 학교를 지원 할때는 학생들과 점수를 비교하는 상대평가 이기때문에, nation 평균점수만으로 본인의 위치를 가늠하는것은 조금 섣부른 판단이니, 참고만 하시고 본인이 낼수 있는 최고점을 향하여 열심히 매진 해야 겠습니다.

오늘 찰스 온라인 클리닉에서는 ACT 리딩을 공부하는 학생들을 위해 ACT 리딩의 이해와 함께 36점 만점으로 가는 팁 몇가지를 소개하고자 합니다.

ACT 리딩은 총 40문제이며 35분동안 문제를 푸는 시스템입니다.

리딩은 크게 4가지의 주제- 문학, 사회학, 인문학,자연과학 

(Literary fiction, Social Science, Humanities, and Natural Science)로 구성되어 있습니다.

여기서 주제별 subtopic을 본다면

문학의 하위 항목으로 리딩 범주를 넓힌다면 - short stories, novels, memoirs 특히 유명인의 회고록, and personal essays.

인문학은 - architecture, art, dance, ethics, film,literary criticism, music, philosophy, radio, television, and theater

사회학 - anthropology, archaeology, biography, business, economics, education, geography, political science and psychology

자연과학 - anatomy, astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, ecology, geology, medicine, meteorology, microbiology, natural history, physiology, physics, technology, and zoology.

위의 항목을 살펴보았듯이 리딩 실력을 키우기 위해서는

독서를 통해 상식을 넓히고 

비평적 사고 능력을 위해 Summary, Essay훈련을 한다면 큰 도움이 될것입니다.

자.. 그럼 찰스샘의 실전 문제 훈련 tip으로 들어가 볼까요?

Literacy fiction의 passage의 포인트와 문제를 어떻게 잡을 것인가.

우선 Literacy나 Humanities같은 종류의 질문들은 작가가 주장하는 의도를 요구하는 질문, 즉,  글의 요지와 포인트를  묻는 질문들이 많습니다.  또한 글에서 언급되지 않는 단어나 문장찾기등이있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 이부분의 passage를 읽을 경우에는 반드시 작가의 요지 파악과 문장흐름을 기억해 두면서 문제를 풀어 나가야 겠습니다.

Social Science는 간단하고 명료한 토론 주제에 의한 토픽같은 이야기들을 주요 골자로 하여 passage에 대한 묘사를 쉽게 풀어내길 원하든가, 글의 메인 포인트를 묻는 질문을 합니다. 즉, 사실과 증거에 입각한 질문과 답을 원한다는 것 입니다. 

그렇다면 Natural Science는 어떨까요?

이 문제를 풀때 딱 한가지 명심해야 할것은 이 글은 논픽션이다! 확연히 문학이나 인문학의 글에서 묻는 질문의 내용과 다르다는것 입니다. 자연과학 natural science에서 다뤄지는 주제들은 천문학,화학,생물학,물리,기계학,의학등 사실에 입각한 논픽션의 주제를 다룹니다. 즉 논리적이고 객관적으로 접근해야 한다는것 이지요, 그렇다고 이 글을 이해하기 위해 어떠한 과학적인 전문지식이 필요하기 보다 글의 독해력 critical reading comprehension의 skill이 필요하다는 것 입니다.

이렇게 다른 Passage를 풀다 보면 자신의 장점과 약점을 파악 할 수 있습니다.

본인이 인문,사회,과학,문학등 어느 분야에서 강하고 약한지를 알고, 약한 부분에 연습을 많이 하고 시간을 투자 해야 할 것입니다.

35분에 40문제를 푼다는것은 결코 쉬운 문제가 아닙니다.

어떻게 해야 시간을 효과적 사용하면서 문제를 풀까요? 

몇가지 소개를 한다면...

첫째, 우선 본인이 잘 풀수 있는 passage로 갑니다. 인문학,문학,사회학,자연과학에서 본인의 강점은 어느 passage입니까?

문제 순서대로 풀지 말고 센스있는 문제풀이로 시간을 먼저 줄여 나가야 합니다.

둘째, Skim Reading을 권합니다.  훓어 읽기라고 하죠. 라인별로 자세히 읽지 말고, 한번 skim하고 문제들을 보고 단락별로 표시를 해두세요. 그다음 다시 한번 읽으면서 포인트를 잡는것입니다. 그렇게 한다면 문제 푸는것에 리듬이 붙어 한결 빨라질것 입니다.

세째, 문제를 먼저 읽고 passage를 보세요. 장문의 passage를 읽다 보면 문제의 요점을 놓치는 경우가 있어, 허겁지겁 다시 두세번 읽는 경우가 빈번합니다. 이럴때 시간을 낭비하는것 입니다. 우선 문제를 읽고 마인드 한다음, 문제에 대한 주요 문장에 표시를 하고 푼다면, 시간과 문제의 답에 적중률을 높일수 있습니다. 

마지막으로 ACT 실전 테스트를 볼때 아래의 질문유형을 명심하시고 대비 하시기 바랍니다. 

글의 요점과 주제는 무엇인가? 이 Passage의 main idea를 잡으세요.

Vocab의 다양한 의미 파악 - 즉 passage에서의 특정 단어가 unusual의미로 사용되는 일이 많습니다. advanced vocab을 많이 알고 공부해야 겠습니다. 

추론할수 있는 질문 파악 - 인문,문학 passage에서 나올수 있는 문제 유형입니다. passage의 요점과 개념을 이해하고 추론하여 답을 하는것이죠. 주관적일수 있으나 명확한 답이 있습니다. 바로 이러한 부분에서 critical reading이 필요합니다. 작가의 견해, 스타일, 의도함을 파악하는 질문은 반드시 있습니다. 

목표로 하는 ACT 점수는 얼마 입니까?

그 목표 점수를 향해 어떻게 공부하고 있나요?
