학교를 지원하는데 있어, Extra Curricular Activities는 시험 성적, 학교 성적 못지 않은 중요한 활동입니다. 

보통 가을, 겨울엔 12학년들에게 있어서는 레귤러 지원 응시에 최선의 노력을 다 할때이고, 10,11 학년들은 여름방학을 이용한 Summer Camp, Research program, Internship, Volunteer등 본인의 적성과 향후 입학대학의 전공관련 경험을 쌓기 위해 여러가지 생각과 아이디어를 짜 내는 시기 이지요.

여름에 Summer Activity 계획을 세우는것은 너무 늦습니다.

대학은 미래를 위해 준비하고 투자한 경험 있는 지원자를 선호합니다. 

본인의 의지로 원하는 일을 결정하세요. 

친구가 한다고, 인기 있는 프로그램이라고 휩쓸려 하기보다, 소신을 갖고 철저한 계획 아래 스스로 즐길 수 있는 일을 실천한다면, 뿌듯한 여름으로 기억될 것입니다. 

그렇게 하기 위해선 몇 가지 생각을 해야겠죠? 
첫째, 나의 목표는 무엇인가? 둘째, 내가 즐길 수 있는 일인가? 등등... 

Rising Senior 에게는 아이비리그에서의 섬머캠프나 인턴쉽을 추천하구요, Junior 에게는 각종 Competition 이나 자원봉사를 추천합니다.

자신의 흥미와, 앞으로의 전공 흐름과 일맥 상통해야 한다는 것. 잊지 마세요..

예를 들어 경영학과에 진학하고자 할 땐, 경영학과 관련된 인턴십이나, 리서치 활동, 봉사활동, 과외활동을 통해 본인이 얼마나 경영학 관심이 있으며, 학업에 열정이 있는지를 보여줘야 합니다.
그리고 그것을 바탕으로 에세이에 정성스레 담아야 합니다. 보통의 지원자들이 이것을 바탕으로 에세이를 쓰잖아요. 제가 전에  작성한 "미국 명문대 합격 TIP, 명품 에세이 작성법"에 예시를 둔 8개 아이비리그 대학에 모두 합격한 콰시에닌의 에세이처럼 말이죠.
 
그러므로 한두 달  전공 관련 과외활동을 했다고, 과외활동을 다 했다고 보시면 안되겠습니다.

고등학교 초부터 미리 전공에 대한 포부와 계획을 갖고 꾸준히 성과를 이룬 계획 있는 모습이 보여야 하겠습니다. 수천 명의 서류를 담당하는 입학심사관들도 이 지원서류가 지원자의 열정과, 꿈, 진정성이 있는 과외활동인지, 아니면 부록으로 따라온 액세서리 정도인지 한눈에 알 수 있을 테니까요.
 

대학에서 주관하는 유명 Summer camp는 보통 겨울 12월부터 시작해 5월사이이 접수를 받습니다.

1) Archaeology at Crow Canyon, Colorado
The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, in southwestern Colorado, offers the three-week High School Field School, where students assist staff archaeologists in excavations and research at the Crow Canyon Pueblo site. Students learn excavation techniques, artifact processing and conservation, and local history and anthropology while staying at the Crow Canyon lodge.

The Center for American Archaeology in Kampsville, Illinois, also offers a High School Field School,

3) Ecology with the EarthWatch Institute
EarthWatch Institute offers numerous summer volunteer research and travel programs for high school students. Students can choose to research climate change in the Canadian Arctic, urban ecosystems in New York City, or sea turtle conservation in Mexico. Programs range from a few days to several weeks in length, and tuition includes lodging and meals at the research site.

4) Marine Biology with Sea Semester
Sea Semester offers summer research programs for high school students in marine biology, coastal environments, and oceanography. Participants in the three-week programs conduct research at one of Sea Semester's shore locations (including Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Catalina Island, California) and also spend time living and working on one of the program's research vessels.

5) Medicine at the National Institute of Health
The National Institute of Health (NIH) offers the eight-week Summer Internship Program in health-care and disease research for high school students, held at the main NIH campus in Bathesda, Maryland. Applications for the internship program are competitive, and chosen candidates receive a stipend to work alongside researchers in fields such as oncology, pediatrics, aging, and environmental health.

6) Medicine at the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program
The Standford Medical Youth Science Program offers a free, campus-based, five-week summer research program for low-income and minority high school juniors and seniors. Students learn science research and writing skills while exploring careers in the health sciences.

7) NIH Summer Internship Program
The National Institutes of Health offers students 16 and older a chance to conduct biomedical research with leading scientists at laboratories in Maryland, North Carolina, Arizona, Montana and Michigan. Students attend lectures, learn about careers and present research posters. To participate, high school students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Programs last for at least eight weeks, usually beginning in May or June. Students receive monthly stipends. The program also is open to college students and graduates.

8) Michigan Math & Science Scholars
The Michigan Math & Science Scholars High School Summer Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor encourages students to study math and science. Classes of 15 students receive instruction from University of Michigan professors in various departments and international instructors. Students can attend one or two 2-week sessions each summer, working in research and computer labs. Students can participate in field work and hands-on experiments. Students can stay in dorms on campus or commute from home, and weekend trips and other activities are offered.

9) Drexel University College of Medicine
The Drexel University College of Medicine High School Summer Research Internship Program allows students at Philadelphia-area high schools to participate in 25 to 40 hours per week of biomedical research activities. Students attend seminars and learn how to use library and online resources for research. In October, students present their research on campus at the College of Medicine's annual research day. During the 8-week program, students receive a $1,500 stipend. To participate, students must be 16 and obtain a work permit.

10) Cornell University's Research Apprenticeship in Biological Sciences
Cornell University's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions offers the Research Apprenticeship in Biological Sciences program each summer for high school juniors and seniors. Students work in laboratories for 40 hours a week with Cornell professors, post-doctoral fellows and students on a research project for publication. Students can earn six college credits. Research topics include molecular biology, cancer research, animal physiology and epidemiology. Students should have some knowledge of cell biology.

Boston State University offers a summer intern program to gifted high school seniors. High school students perform college level experiments using state-of-the-art laboratories in the presence of college science professors. Students perform research studies in astronomy, chemistry, engineering, medicine, biology, psychology and physics with guidance of a Boston University science mentor. Applicants must be American citizens entering senior year of high school to meet eligibility requirements, and the six-week honors class internship may be completed while residing on campus by students who are unable to commute.

4) The National Institutes of Health
According to the U.S. Department of Human Services, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers numerous summer internships to high school students over the age of 16. Internships are available for high school students at the main campus in Bethesda, Maryland. NIH student internships focus exclusively on science and biomedical research, and include lectures and informal lunch meetings for students working side-by-side with top world renowned scientists. NIH summer high school internship programs typically begin in May or June and last approximately eight weeks.

미시건 국제학생 SAT 학원 수강후 예상점수 하락

SAT/ACT 학원 수강 후 시험 전까지 개인 집중 훈련 또는 클리닉 수업 필수

많은 학생들이 SAT 학원 수강 후 학습과 훈련의 공백기를 두고 SAT 시험을 치르는 경우가 많습니다. 이 경우 학생들은 학원 수강시의 모의고사 성적 정도는 나올 것이라 기대하는 데요, 많은 경우 하락한 점수가 나오게 됩니다. 

이는 학원 수강으로 쌓은 실력이 계속 유지되는 것이 아니라 지속적인 훈련 부족으로 예상 점수가 하락하기 때문입니다. 

현재 클리닉 수업을 받고 있는 미시건 국제학생 U 군의 경우 지난여름에 학원에서 SAT를 수강 했었습니다.

그러나 4개월 이후 찰스샘이 pre-SAT 리딩을 테스트해본 결과 부모님께서 주신 모의고사 점수와 보유 실력과는 많은 차이가 있었습니다. 

이 학생은 아직 11학년이라 반전의 기회가 충분히 있는데요,

학원 수강 이후에도 시험 전까지 꾸준한 개인 훈련이나 클리닉 수업으로 보다 향상된 점수를 받는 것이 현명한 판단이라 생각됩니다.

대학 지원시 유리한 Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular Activities는 지원자의 흥미와 적성, 더 나아가서는 인성과 가치관을 볼 수 있는 매개체가 됩니다.

그렇기 때문에 과외활동을 통한 resume 작성은 중요한 매개체가 되지 않을 수가 없습니다.

또한 에세이를 작성을 할 때 Main Topic이 되는 경우가 흔치 않습니다.

그래서 오늘은 섹션 별로 나열을 해 볼까 합니다.

본인의 적성과 맞추어 선택하는데 참고 하시기 바랍니다.

1) Clubs

Chess club, mathletes, mock trial, debate, animé club, role playing club, language clubs, film club,

2) Governance

고등학교 클럽 선택 요령 Best tip 7

대학은 학생들을 선정할 때, 지원자의 훌륭한 아카데믹 성적도 요구하지만, 또한 다양한 경험을 하길 원합니다.

물론 과외활동이 대학 입학을 위한 포커스가 되어선 안되겠지만, 그만큼 과외활동은 대입 지원에 큰 작용을 하는 것이 지금의 현실입니다. 

우리가 일컫는 과외활동 즉 Extracurricular Activities에는 봉사활동, 클럽활동을 일컫습니다.

대학은 지원자의 과외활동을 통해, 지원자의 리더십과 열정, 흥미, 인성을 직접적으로 보고자 하는 것입니다.

오늘은 고등학교 클럽활동 선택 요령에 대해 포스팅해 보고자 합니다.

1. 본인이 열정을 가지고 할 수 있는 하고 싶은 클럽을 선택하세요.

    클럽 선택은 본인이 원하는 것을 해야 합니다.

    인기가 있다고, 친구가 한다고 무작정 등록하면, 나중에 후회할 수 있습니다.

2. 다양한 클럽 활동을 하시기 바랍니다.

   대학은 지원자가 다양한 경험을 하길 원합니다.

   한가지 클럽 활동만 하지 말고, 지원자의 다양한 면모를 클럽활동을 통해 보일 수 있도록,  최소 3가지의

   클럽활동을 하기 바랍니다.

   클럽활동을 통해, 지원자의 리더십, 책임감, 열정과 헌신, 단체생활의 적응 등을 보여주세요.

3. 스포츠 클럽

 스포츠 클럽은 Teamwork를 보여줄 수 있는 대표적인 클럽활동 중 하나이며, 건강한 모습을 보여줄 수 있는 필수 클럽입니다.  스포츠에 참가하고, 경쟁하고, 상대를 도와주고, 건강미를 보이고, 인내심과 책임감을 클럽활동을 통해 보여줄 수 있답니다. 개인 스포츠보다는 단체 스포츠 클럽에 가입을 추천합니다. 단체 스포츠를 통해 협동심을 배우소 의사소통 능력을 향상 시킬 수 있어, 추후 대입 에세이 작성에 좋은 소재가 될 수 있습니다. 특히 찰스샘의 학생들이 가운데에 스포츠 에세이로 명문대에 합격한 학생들이 많이 있습니다.  

4. 관심 분야를 보여줄 수 있는 클럽을 선택해 보세요.

예를 들어 경영학, 과학, 공학, 환경학, 교육학, 법학 등에 관심 있는 학생이라면, 그에 상응하는 클럽활동에 가입하여

미래 전공, 혹은 직업 관련 활동을 미리 경험해 봄으로써 배우고, 느낀다면, 더할 나위 없는 멋진 클럽활동이 될 것입니다.

5. 다문화를 배울 수 있는 클럽

우리는 글로벌 시대에 살고 있지요.

외국에서 공부하는 학생이라면, 본인의 클래스에 다양한 인종이 함께 공부하는 것을 쉽게 접할 것입니다.

상대방의 문화를 인정해 주고, 함께 즐기는 것.

국가와 문화에 대한 편견이 없는 모습은, 글로벌 시대를 이끌어 가는 리더의 대표적인 모습일 것입니다.

6. National Honor Society 가입을 권장합니다.

Grade point가 대략 4.0 정도 되고, 학업이 우수하고, 사회, 과학, 예술에 뛰어난 학생이라면, 선생님의 추천서와 함께

National Science Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Natioal Honor Society 등의 단체에 가입해 보세요.

장학금의 기회와 리더십과 책임감 등을 배울 수 있는 매우 좋은 기회가 될 것입니다.

7. 원하는 클럽이 없다면, 본인이 직접 만들어 보세요.

굳이 끼어 맞추기 식으로, 마음에 들지 않는 클럽을 들어갈 필요는 없습니다.

본인이 직접 클럽을 만들어 추진해 보세요. 학생들을 모아, 리더십을 발휘한다면, 멋진 추억과 함께, 소중한 경험을 얻을 것입니다.
