Testing
Required Testing
The ACT Plus Writing or the SAT (Critical Reading, Math and Writing) is required. Official scores from all test dates must be sent to Stanford directly from the ACT or the College Board (the reporting agency for the SAT) or both if the applicant has taken the ACT and the SAT. Applicants may not use the College Board's Score Choice feature or "hide" any scores with either testing agency.
Guidelines
Score reports must arrive by the applicable application deadline. Refer to the application deadlines for the last acceptable SAT and ACT Plus Writing exam dates. We do not accept test substitutions. International students who are unable to take either test should review ourguidelines for testing exemptions.
- Applicants should self-report their highest scores to date on the Common Application while their official test scores are being processed and sent to Stanford.
- Applicants must submit all SAT scores and all ACT scores directly from the testing agencies. The only exceptions are tests taken for the purpose of talent programs in middle or junior high school (for example, Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth and Duke University's Talent Identification Program). These test scores do not have to be sent to Stanford.
- Stanford recognizes that the ACT charges a fee for each score report. If you are applying with a fee waiver and the cost associated with the submission of all ACT scores presents a financial hardship, you may simply send one score report and self-report the remainder of your ACT scores. All official scores will be required if you are offered admission.
Redesigned SAT
In March 2016 the College Board will offer a redesigned SAT. We are looking forward to the new exam and add the following information:
- Stanford will accept scores from both the current SAT and the redesigned SAT.
- Stanford will require all three components of the redesigned SAT: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, Math, and Essay.
- We will superscore the results from the current and redesigned SAT separately.
Superscoring Test Results
- For the SAT, we will focus on the highest individual Critical Reading, Math and Writing scores from all test sittings.
- For the ACT, we will focus on the highest Composite and the highest Combined English/Writing scores from all test sittings. We will also consider individual subscores.
Recommended Testing
- SAT Subject Tests are recommended but not required. Applicants who do not take SAT Subject Tests will not be at a disadvantage. Because SAT Subject Tests are optional, applicants may use Score Choice to selectively send their SAT Subject Test scores.
- AP examination scores are recommended but not required. If you have these scores, we recommend you self-report them on the Common Application. You may report any scores you choose.
- If English is not your native language, we recommend, but do not require, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The TOEFL cannot replace the SAT or ACT Plus Writing.
Late Test Scores
We recommend students take the required tests well in advance of the application deadlines. It is unlikely that scores from tests taken after the deadlines will arrive in time for review. Similarly, please allow sufficient time for official scores to arrive by the application deadlines. We cannot delay the review of an application in anticipation of scores that will arrive after the deadline nor can we guarantee that late scores will be reviewed.

International Students
Stanford has a limited amount of financial aid for international students. International students needing assistance must make that indication on the admission application. Aid eligibility will be determined based on family financial circumstances.
International students who do not request consideration for financial aid at the time they apply for admission will not be eligible to apply for aid at Stanford throughout their undergraduate years.
In order to receive university scholarship funds, international students must obtain either a Social Security number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Stanford's Bechtel International Center offers information on their website about obtaining an SSN or an ITIN.
Types of Aid
University Scholarship
Scholarship from Stanford is the primary source of funding used to assist students with meeting their educational costs. Many university scholarship funds originate as gifts from individuals and corporations. All university scholarship funds are awarded on the basis of financial need as determined by information provided on the CSS Profile. We determine your individual scholarship eligibility by subtracting the amount we expect you and your parents to contribute toward your costs and other federal and state grant funds from the total student budget.
No separate application is required for any of our specific scholarship funds.
Federal Grants
Stanford Undergraduates are eligible to be considered for the Federal Pell Grant and Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant. Eligibility is based on financial need as determined by information provided on the FAFSA. We automatically consider your eligibility for federal grant funds when reviewing your financial aid application; no separate application is required.
State Grants
To be considered for the Cal Grant program, you must file the FAFSA and the Cal Grant GPA Verification Form by the state deadline of March 2nd. Students without lawful immigration status who are unable to complete the FAFSA should file the California Dream Act Application.
Outside Scholarships
Another way to cover part of the Student Responsibility portion of your financial aid package is to obtain outside scholarships. Outside scholarships can be used to meet your Student Responsibility expectation dollar-for-dollar. If you are receiving Stanford scholarship and receive outside scholarships that total more than your Student Responsibility, your need-based scholarship eligibility will be reduced. Essays
We want to hear your individual voice in your writing. Write essays that reflect who you are; use specific concrete details and write in a natural style. Begin work on these essays early, and feel free to ask your parents, teachers and friends to provide constructive feedback. Ask if the essay's tone sounds like your voice. If those closest to you do not believe your essay captures who you are, we will not be able to recognize what is distinctive about you. While asking for feedback is suggested, do not enlist hired assistance in the writing of your essays.
Common Application Essay
Candidates choose one topic and respond. (250-word minimum, 650-word maximum.)
- Some students have a background, identity, interest or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
- The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you have experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
- Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
- Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
- Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.
Stanford Short Essays
Candidates respond to all three essay topics. (250 word limit for each essay.)
- Stanford students possess an intellectual vitality. Reflect on an idea or experience that has been important to your intellectual development.
- Virtually all of Stanford's undergraduates live on campus. Write a note to your future roommate that reveals something about you or that will help your roommate—and us—know you better.

Scholarships and Financial Aid
International students are generally not eligible for the same kinds of financial aid that American students are eligible for; however, there are some scholarships and other programs available for international students at Illinois State.
Undergraduate students:
Presidential Scholarship
This is a $44,000 total award ($11,000 per year renewable for up to four years) for new freshmen. Students who are eligible for the Honor's Program and have at least a 30 ACT (1340 SAT) will be invited to apply. Learn more about the Presidential Scholarship. In order to be eligible, international freshman students must have an official ACT or SAT score.
University Scholarship
This is a minimum $24,000 award (minimum $6,000 per year renewable for up to four years) for new freshmen from traditionally underrepresented groups, or first generation college students who have overcome hardship in achieving their academic goals. Minimum credentials required to be invited to apply are an ACT score of at least 25 (1150 SAT) and a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale. Redbird Academic Scholarship
This is an award ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 per year, renewable for up to four years, for new freshmen. Minimum credentials for consideration are an ACT score of at least 25 (1150 SAT) and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale. Learn more about the Redbird Academic Scholarship. In order to be eligible, international freshman students must have an official ACT or SAT score.
Transfer Student Scholarship
Transfer Student Scholarship is a highly competitive and prestigious award for transfer students attending Illinois State University. The awards are valued at $2,000 per year for two years for a total value of $4,000. The awards are based on academic merit rather than on financial need. Students are invited to apply and must have at least a 3.5 college GPA or higher and 30 credit hours completed at the time of enrollment.

Emory Scholars
The Emory Scholars Program provides merit-based awards to students who have established strong academic records while being active in their school and community. Additional Scholarship Opportunities
National Merit ScholarshipEntering National Merit finalists, who select Emory or Oxford as their first choice college and notify the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, will receive a National Merit Scholarship of $2000 sponsored by Emory / Oxford. If the National Merit Scholarship recipient has been awarded institutional grant funding, the grant award will not be reduced by the amount of the scholarship.
