Rolling Admission이란 무엇인가 [미국대학 입학시험 제도]

What Is Rolling Admission?

쉽게 말하자면, 대학 정원이 채워 질때까지 학생을 받는것을 의미한다.

보통 Rolling Admission을  유명하지 않는 대학이나 수준이 떨어 지는 학교가 한다는 잘못된 인식이 있는데,  절대 그렇지 않다.

Rolling Admission은 보통 이른 가을에 Apply를 시작 하여, 그 다음해 여름까지 진행되기도 한다.

그렇다고 해서 RA가 Deadline이 없는것은 아니다.

Rolling Admission 장점

Rolling 이라고 해서, 늦장을 피우다 낭패를 볼 수 있다.

RA Apply가 시작되었을때, 일찍 지원하는것이  여러 가지 면에 있어 이롭다.

1. RA 일찍 지원 한다면 합격률이 높다.

2. 일찍 지원 한다면, 장학금 지원시 받을 확률이 높다.

3. 일찍 지원 한다면, Housing 배정 또한 이롭다.

4. RA 지원시 합격 했다 하더라도, 5월 1일까지 결정 할 수 있는 시간이 있으므로, 

    다른 학교 합격 찬스의 기회를 볼 수 있다.

5. RA 지원한 후 몇 주 안에 합격, 불합격의 결과나 나오므로 Regular Admission등 

    다른 대학을 지원 할 수 있는 시간이 있다.

6. Regular Admission에서 불합격 했을 경우, 여전히 오픈되어 있는 Rolling Admission 대학을 

   찾아 볼 수 있다. 어떤 대학은 학기가 시작되기 바로 직전 까지 지원을 받는 대학들도 있다.

 

 

단점

요점을 말 하자면, 일찍 지원해야 한다는것이다.

늦게 지원하게 되면, 합격은 할 수 있으되, 그 외 다른 혜택을 받기가 힘들다.

예를 들자면,  Rolling Admission은 deadline이 유동적으로 오픈되어 있지만, 장학금 지원이나 Financial Aid 같은 경우  deadline이 있으므로, RA지원시 일찍 지원해야 경제적으로 공부 할 수 있는 찬스를 누릴수 있다.

늦게 지원하여, 입학하게 되면 프로그램 선정이나 클래스 관리, Housing 선택등 미리 선택한 학생들로 인해 선택의 폭이 좁아져 불리한 캠퍼스 생활을 하게 된다.

Rolling Admission제도를 사용하는 대학들의 예:

University of Minnesota: Application review begins September 15; priority is given to applications received by December 15; after December 15th, applications are considered on a space-available basis.

Rutgers University: December 1st priority deadline; February 28th notification date; May 1st decision deadline; after December 1st, applications are considered on a space-available basis.

Indiana University: November 1st priority date for merit-based scholarships; February 1st priority date for admission; 

April 1st deadline to be considered for admission.

Penn State: November 30 priority date for admission

University of Pittsburgh: Applications accepted until class is full; January 15th deadline for scholarships

Early Decision이란 무엇인가? [미국 대학입학 시험 제도]

Early Decision is binding and restrictive!

Early Decision은 Early Action과 다르게 오직 한 학교만 지원 할 수 있으며,

지원 학교에 합격할 경우 반드시 입학을 해야 한다.

보통 미국의 top 대학들이 Early Decision제도를 가지고 있다.

장점: Regular Admission에 비해 입학 합격률이 높다. 

ED는 한 학교만 지원 할 수 있는 제도로, ED 지원자는 그 학교에대한 신념과 의지가 매우 강한 지원자들이 원서를 내기때문에, 학교 측 에서도 ED 지원자들을 매우 반기는 편이다.

단점: 장점이자 단점이 될수 있는 한 학교 지원은 큰 도전이자 위험부담이 될 수 있다. 

다른 대학들을 지원 할 수 있는 기회를 놓치게 되기 때문이다.

그러므로 ED지원시 지원 학교에 대한 강한 신념과 의지로 후회없는 선택을 해야 겠다.

Application Deadline이 11월 1일부터 중순까지 이다. 그 안에 완벽한 Application을 작성하려면 많은 노력과 수고가 필요하다. 12월 중순 즈음 합격자 발표가 있는데, 불합격 될 경우, 다음 학교를 대비 하고 준비하는데 심리적 압박과 사기저하가 올 수 있다.
