Cost and Financial Aid

At Boston College, 40.6 percent of full-time undergraduates receive some kind of need-based financial aid and the average need-based scholarship or grant award is $35,082.

Scholarship and Grants
The terms "scholarship" and "grant" are used interchangeably at Boston College. Scholarships are need-based aid that do not need to be repaid. Funding for scholarships come from a variety of sources, including more than 500 named scholarships.

Financial Aid
Students may be eligible for the various types of aid listed below. Eligibility for all financial aid is determined annually based on updated application materials. 
To apply for federal and/or state aid, you need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Federal aid includes Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Direct Loans, both subsidized and unsubsidized, Perkins loans, Nursing loans, and Work-Study. State aid varies by state. Once the FAFSA is completed, you may be selected by the Federal Processor for a process called verification, which means you will have to provide your actual tax data on the FAFSA through the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

When applying to University of Michigan--Ann Arbor, it's important to note the application deadline is February 1, andthe early action deadline is November 1Scores for either the ACT or SAT test are due February 1. The application fee at University of Michigan--Ann Arbor is $75.

International Students
  1. You must apply via The Common Application, and submit the University of Michigan Questions. International students are not eligible for application fee waivers.
  2. All undergraduate first-year applicants are required to submit test results from either the SAT with writing or the ACT with writing.
  3. Submit the School Report.
  4. Submit one Teacher Evaluation.
  5. Submit a Counselor Recommendation (encouraged, but not required).
  6. Submit your high school transcript. An official English translation is required to accompany the transcript if the transcript is not issued in English by the school. (Students who have already completed high school, including university transfer applicants, should be sure to have final high school transcript submitted showing the graduation date. Also provide a detailed explanation of any educational gaps.)
  7. If you are a speaker of English as a second language, you will need to submit your MELAB, TOEFL, or IELTS scores.
Please note that international students on temporary visas are not eligible for financial aid, and should expect to pay the full cost of attendance. Scholarships are generally not available.

How to apply for Aid
1. The FAFSA: To apply for federal student aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using U-M's federal code 002325. The FAFSA is available on Jan. 1  at no cost to students (for students applying for Fall 2017, the FAFSA will be available on Oct. 1, 2016).  You will be considered for Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grant, Perkins Loan and Federal Direct Loans as well as the Michigan Competitive Scholarship, Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver, Health Professional Loan, Nursing Student Loan and Work-Study awards.
2. The PROFILE: If you wish to be considered for U-M grants and merit scholarships that demonstrate need, complete the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE using U-M's CSS code 1839 to ensure that we receive your PROFILE. The PROFILE is available on Oct. 1 each year.

    ※ Students whose first language is not English or who have attended an English-speaking school for fewer than two years are required to provide evidence of their English proficiency by submitting the results of the TOEFL or the IELTS.
  • Students whose first language is not English should take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Students who are bilingual in English and another language and have scored well on the verbal portion of the SAT may be exempted from the TOEFL and IELTS.
